Forestry Department - Education Building

Location: Lai, Papua New Guinea
Client: AusAID / PNG UoT
Status: Completed 2001

The Forestry Human Resource Development Project was developed to enhance the UoT’s ability to provide Integrated Diploma and Degree courses for the Faculty of Forestry. The project was funded by the Australian Government, through AusAID and encompassed site development and utilities, a new Administration building, Research, Seminar and Laboratory teaching blocks, together with refurbishment designs for the University’s Bulolo Timber Training College. ‘Managing PNG’s forest resources on a sustainable basis largely depends on the effectiveness of the people working in the forestry sector. This project aims to upgrade forestry training programs at the Timber Industry Training College and encourage the application of sustainable forestry practices.’ It was with this aim in mind that JCA designed the Forestry Building focusing on the importance of timber and its use as a sustainable resource. The philosophy adopted was therefore to use locally available sustainable timbers to create a distinct identity for the building that provided a unique presence whilst maintaining a link with its immediate environment. Local artists were commissioned to design metal screens and timber carvings that afford the building a uniquely PNG quality.
