QUT P Block Lift Access

Location: Brisbane, Australia
Client: Queensland University of Technology
Status: Completed 2015

JCA were appointed by QUT to undertake the role of Principal Consultants in the design of a new lift tower and bridge link capable of improving the physical access for staff and students between P-Block and the internal link road of the Kelvin Grove Campus. Importantly this link is part of a broader campus masterplan and offered a gateway from the university carpark in addition to P-Block to the main campus. The simplicity of the form and aesthetic of the lift tower and bridge link masked the complexities of the project in particular the need to work with the existing building architecture to create a continuity of design along with the large level difference that ultimately drove the project need but also added to the challenges. The precast concrete panels adopted a horizontal linear pattern that was influenced by the large trees adjacent the tower offering a formal response to the natural environment. Access from the lower level is by both lift or stairs which run parallel to the tower and bridge. This simple project offers crucial link within the university and reflects the broader effort by QUT to further enhance the accessibility of the Kelvin Grove Campus for all students.
